CORONA TREATING IS A VERY EFFECTIVE WAY TO INCREASE THE SURFACE TENSION OF POLYMERIC FILMS, FOILS, AND PAPER TO PROMOTE THE ADHESION OF INKS, ADHESIVES AND COATINGS AT THE SURFACE. THIS PROCESS IS USED IN THE WHOLE CONVERTING SECTOR.
Ever since 1965, Ferrarini & Benelli have remained the leader in designing electronic modules called : CORONA TREATMENT STATIONS.
Method : Corona treatment can significantly improve adhesion of inks on film, paper and textile. It is also used for composites, adhesives, metallised film surfaces, etc.
It ensures inter-layer adhesion between two products.
Principle : Corona treatment is an electronic process, the so-called CORONA EFFECT. High frequency, electronic discharges ionise with cations.
The surface tension of the film is then activated : this wettability is measured in DYNE/cm.
As a matter of interest : A dyne is a unit that communicates to a 1-gram mass an acceleration of 1 cm/s².
Reminder : On extrusion lines all films are subjected to Corona treatment. If stored over a long period of time exceeding one month, the surface tension of the film will degrade. It will then loose all its characteristics for promoting adhesion.
Explanation : A film with a surface tension from 42 to 44 Dyne/cm will have a value of 38 dyne when it goes to print.
During storage, the various chemical agents that make up the film migrate towards the outer layer of the film. This stabilisation process reduces the microcraters and, as a result, the surface tension.
Consequently, inks will adhere poorly to the film. It therefore seems appropriate to suggest complete modules for Corona treatment.
